I have the avent and I love it… maybe something is wrong with the assembly or just the pump itself?
a manual pump never worked for me either. i rented and electric one and it barely worked. some women just cant get milk when they pump. the electric ones do work a lot better then the manual ones though. maybe you’ll just have to hand express but i could never aim into a container lol.
I have the same breast pump and it works for me. The first minute of express, takes a while sometimes but it gets the milk flowing. It takes about 15 minutes to get all the milk out from one breast. Make sure your whole breast is into the suction to make it work. or try to lean forward and it’ll might work. I would prefer an electric pump but too pricey.
You should get an electronic pump. Doing it manually is exhausting and inefficient. I rented the Medela Symphony from the hospital and it was excellent. I would only suggest that though if you exclusively pump. Otherwise, there are a few different Medela electronic pumps on the market. I’m sure the Avent electronic pumps are good as well, if you prefer that brand.
I have the avent manual pump, Patience is definitely the key.
Make sure that the pump is completely dry and tightened enough or else you loose suction. When i first used it, expressing took me an hour just to get out 2 or 3oz! Very frustrating if you need to travel and want to take breast milk.
But i persevered and started to produce more milk and filled 4oz in about 10 minutes.
Good luck
Is it the newer one piece model, or an older several piece model? The older ones were prone to cracking and losing suction. It is a good pump though (either version, as long as all the pieces are in good shape).
Make sure to start with little pumps, quickly, just like a baby, and angle downwards. Once the milk starts coming, use longer strokes.
Try calling your local breastfeeding clinic, IBCLC, or the LLL for some hands on help.
I had that pump just make sure you have the valve the right way up as it wont suck properly! i put it together rong so many times you will get the hang of it!
I used to have that pump. It worked wonderfully for me. Can you feel the suction when you press the handle? If you can’t, you may have put in the valve the wrong way.
Other than pumping at work, I used to pump in the morning while my baby was having breakfast at the other breast. I used to get a lot of milk this way.
i have a manual avent one too and it works great. the valve has to be pushed up all the way..do a couple of fast pumps to get the milk to start flowing and continue from there. I also have an ameda purely yours that works great. think about getting an electric one if this one still is doing nothing for you.
oh, and take off that massaging petal thing on the flange…that piece never worked out for me..for me, the suction was better with out it..
"I have a avent breast pump(manual) but it sucks"
LOL, that’s what breast pumps are *supposed* to do.
Seriously, though, if you need to express any sizable amount, I would get an electric. Medela is a good brand. The double ones are pricey, but you can save money by getting a single (it will just take longer, and it will not be as efficient because you won’t get the benefit of the let down in both breasts at the same time. If you invest in a good one, the Pump in Style is great, then just realize it is an investment: even an expensive pump is cheaper than formula in the long run.
Good luck.
