Can you help me compare baby bottles, and breast pump systems?
I am particularly interested in the products by Avent and by Playtex, but will be open to suggestion. I would like to put all one brand of bottles, accessories, and breast pump on my baby registry.
I am having my first child and will be breasfeeding for at least 6 months. I understand that the bottles with a bend are good for preventing ear infections, but the avent bottles seem to have a special system for avoiding gas and colic. Has anyone tried the Avent system?
Next, both manufacturers make bottles that can use a disposable insert. What are the perks/drawbacks of using these as opposed to regular bottles?
Next, has anyone used a particular breast pump and has an opinion about it? Can an electric breast pump be used to pump directly into a bottle with a disposable liner, or does it have to go into a regular bottle?
Thanks so much!!!

I am a working mom, so I pump every day for my 4 month old son. I use the Avent Isis IQ Duo Twin Pump. I am really pleased with it - I have never had any problems, and it is easy to assemble and carry - I take it to and from work every day. It comes with all the accessories you need to keep the milk cool. And it has a lot of nice features that I haven’t seen in any other pump.
I also use Avent bottles, but I use Second Nature nipples. (They are most like the breast - they are hard to find, but I wouldn’t use anything but.) Fortunately they fit the Avent bottles.
I have not tried to pump into anything other than the bottles. I would imagine that you can use a liner, but I would be afraid to lose any of the milk to drips. (It is liquid gold!) Also, I only pump into the 4 oz. bottles, as I find them a little more stable than the 9 oz. ones.
Keep in mind that your little one may change your plans on his/her own, as I have heard of some babies being very particular about their bottles/nipples.
Also get yourself an Easy Expressions bra - keeps your hands free while you are pumping. And buy some Medela Quick Clean Micro Steam bags - makes sterilizing things a breeze. Good luck!
Breast pumps made me feel like I was a cow…The sound of the machine was like "mooo mooo" lol But its good for the baby..My fav was the Platex Disposable Liners & Bottles. I never had a prob w/ my son having gas! And you can easily pour your milk into the bottlet.just dont feed the baby laying flaton the back, keep him/her upright. I also added a lil bit of baby cereal in his bottle when he was two months, and playtex had different types and sizes of nipples just for cereal feedings.P.S This will help you sleep longer!! He is a healthy wonderful little boy!!! Hope all goes well…and get your rest now!!!
I like the playtex bottles, because the nipples seem to be a better shape. My daughter wouldn’t take the round nipples, only the flat ones. You can buy plastic bags to store the milk in and they fit in the bottles. The drawback is that you have the waste from all the bags, since they’re not reusable. I have a First Years electric pump. You have to pump into the container, and pour it into the bottle. It’s not a very good pump. I’d spend at least $100 if you plan to be pumping a lot.
I use the ameda truely yours dual action electric pump. ( I suggest dual action electric pumps because they are much quicker to use).It is cheaper then the medella pump system. It works great, I have had mine for almost eight years I used it with my seven year old for over a year. I pulled it out again recently for my now 4 month old and I was surprised that it still worked and I didnt have to buy a new one! I purchased new plastic parts just because but I probably could have resterilized my old parts. With my first child she never would take a bottle so we had to transition straight to the cup. With my now 4 month old, I use the Dr. Brown;s bottles and I really like them. I tried the second nature bottle but he didnt like it. I decided to stick with just one bottle brand because I didnt want him to be confused with all the different nipples. I trued the Avent bottles with hy first child but because of all the praise I hear with the Dr Brown system I decided to go that route. You also asked about pumping into a bottle with a disposible liner. I know that the breast storage bags can be used in the type of bottles that use liners. I currently use Lanisinoh storage bags.
Avent bottles are great…Although a little expensive, they really work if you get a gassy baby…
I bought Medela Pump in Style (about $300)…HATED it…
Got Avent Isis manual pump as a gift from hubby…LOVED it even though it was manual…it felt like it really "emptied me out"…
