Can Medela Breast Pump build up my milk supply significantly?
I just bought the Medela Pump In Style double pump and I was wondering how long would it take to build up my milk supply. I just tried it now and expressed about 1 oz all together and I was excited. When I used my Avent Isis manual I only get drips and drabs. I am trying to get 9 week old to have breast milk exclusively, and off formula for good. I have to supplement for now.
Blair- I do nurse on demand when I am home. I work full time, that is why I am asking this question. Also, I am not sure if my baby is getting enough and is satisfied, or she just falls asleep cause she is tired from nursing at my meager milk store.

If you nurse your baby and also pump that will definitely build your milk supply up. After you nurse your baby then pump from the side that your baby did not nurse from or nursed from very little. If your baby nurses from both side a lot then pump after the feeding for about 10 to 15 min on both sides to make your body think that you need to produce more milk. right now don’t worry about making bottle worry about getting your supply up.
If you are not nursing your baby and only pumping then pump every hour and half to two hours. That is going to be time consuming but it will help to build your supply up.
You have a great pump to get your milk supply up as well as to keep it there so don’t worry about the pump the pump is great. I have that pump and have used it for 4 years now. First with my daughter and now with my son.
Edit: Just to let you know if your baby falls asleep at the breast then she is full. Usually that is a sign that she is done. either pulling off or falling asleep. The way you can know if your baby is getting enough milk is by how many wet and poopy diapers you are getting. If you are getting 5 or more wet diapers and 1 to 3 poopy diapers then you are good.
The best thing you can do to build up your supply is nurse your baby on demand. Babies are much more efficient than a pump and your body will respond to your baby’s needs.
It took me a couple of weeks, it takes time for your body to adjust to using a pump. Just be diligent about it. Liek when you are nursing on one side pump the other. It took me almost a month, but now I have excess milk. I was so frustrated my husband told me to stop and just give our son formula. poor guy, how I ripped into him that day. What I did was while at home pumped every 2 hours, until not even a drop was coming out for about 2 min. then also every 3 hours at work. Again it took almost a month but I now have loads of milk. Good luck with your little blessing
P.S. Good job mommy
EDIT: I also use the same breast pump.. I love it
good choice
I only breast feed, no formula, i also pump, when i first pumped it was hard, but i express the milk(squeeze the milk to the nipple) and squeeze my nipple to get the duct openings open, and some days i get 1oz, and some days i get 5oz, it depends on what i eat and how much liquid i drink.
keep trying and it will work out.
i would say, freeze what u pump until u get a good supply, then take ur baby off formula, cause ur baby needs to eat.
i also use Medela breast pump, 3in1.
Pumping really helped my milk supply and the type of pump makes a difference too. Just pump as often as you can while at work. I was going to school full time and pumped every chance I got in my car.
In addition to everyone else’s answers make sure to drink lots and lots of water. I could drink up to a gallon a day and would have so much milk it was crazy! Good luck and good job!
I had to pump w/ both my kids. I used the Medela both times. The best thing to do to build your milk supply is to try to pump as often as you can - every 2 hrs for 20 mins at first, then when you start to get your milk going (more comming in), you can pump every 3 hrs for 15 mins. It may take a couple of weeks to build up your milk supply. The more you pump, the more you’ll start to make. Try to pump until you’re dry (no more milk comming out). I find that usually some milk will come out at around 10 mins of pumping, then if I keep going, more will come out again at 20 mins. You kind just have to figure out your own "schedule".
