Philips AVENT Express Electric Steam Steriliser

The Avent Express Steam Steriliser does exactly what it says on the box. Great value for money and they throw in a few free bottles aswell. Must de-scale every 4 weeks as they recommend, I would suggest every 3 weeks if you live in a hard water area. I have used mine through 2 babies now and it is still going strong and now being used by my friend, it has never let me down. The instructions are clear and concise and it couldn't be easier to use. Takes between 8-10 minutes depending on how fully loaded it is. I could get 6 bottles in and around 4 dummies aswell, make sure you check the instructions on how to load as if you don't get it just right you won't get much in! It's very simple
Life saver

I have to disagree with the other two reviews. This machine is amazing and I love steam sterlising because hot water feels like the best way to sterlise bottles. The freshly sterlised bottles feels very warm and clean. The machine does not use a lot of energy if you use the correct amount of water. Besides, when you keep the cover on, the bottles stay sterlised for 24 hours. I trust avent and I am still using the machine after one year for my child's weaning dishes and spoons. The machine can be cleaned thoroughly using a descaler every couple of months. I cannot live without this machine even for one day!
Very good steriliser, requires manual intervention, also consider the more automated iQ24 version

In general I have found the Philips Avent range of baby products to be of excellent quality and this steam steriliser is no different.

It is worth noting that Philips have two models in their electric steriliser range which are very similar in basic function and look almost identical. You have a choice to make as to whether you go with this (more manual but cheaper) version or the iQ24 (has a 24 hour automated cycle meaning less intervention but is more expensive) version (Philips AVENT SCF276 iQ24 Electronic Steam Steriliser). I suggest you read reviews for both before you make a decision.

Key Benefits:

- good looking, compact design, fits into our "baby carpet bag" upright at one end so no danger of spillage
- easy to use once you have got the hang of it (great for tired parents but see niggles), just add water and press the single button to sterilise the contents
- holds up to six bottles (125ml or 260ml), collars, teats and caps
- has enough space to fit in a couple of dummies/teething rings to be sterilised along with the bottles
- a full sterilisation cycle is quick and fully automatic, taking eleven minutes including a cooling period (rushable to eight minutes if you assemble the components hot which is not recommended by Philips but has been recommended by baby a couple of times - cool the teat by passing some milk through it and check of course!)
- product includes a selection of bottles, teats and dummies (exact details seem to vary on Phillips' whims - mine came with one 125ml bottle, one 260ml bottle, one flow level one teat, one flow level two teat and two dummies) as well as a washing up brush

Niggles:

- the small tweezers which come with this to allow you to assemble a teat without touching it are fiddly (not so great for tired parents), we got used to this and have only fumbled a couple of times but you might want to invest in a better set
- two of the six collars in a full steriliser end up needing to be placed under the lower of the two trays in the device (which is holding the bottles) getting at them means lifting out the remaining two bottles balanced on this tray, another chance to fumble, probably best avoided by moving them up above the tray while fully awake in daylight hours!
- after you remove a sterilised bottle and feed your baby, you need to wait ten minutes, empty out any water which remains in the steriliser, add fresh water and start the steriliser running manually again. Once this is done the contents will be ready for use at any time over the next six hours. Whether this is an issue for you or whether you would rather pay for the additional convenience of the iQ24 model (see above) which will automatically resterilise the remaining contents at the touch of a button is something you will need to make a judgement on. For me personally, the iQ24 was the way to go.

All in all this is a good option if you do not wish to spend the additional money on the iQ24 version so I am not allowing the niggles to detract from a full five star rating.
Love It!

Bought one of these in year 2005 for my son and now using it for my daughter. I love it. I use it to sterilize bottles, pacifiers, breast milk storage containers, even the breast pump. It can fit in a lot more than if you were to sterilize through boiling in a pot. I like that:
1) You only need to press a button and it will turn off when it's done
2) It cools down very quickly so you can handle the bottles using your bare hands
Excellent labour-saving appliance, a must have for tired parents!

We love the AVENT steam steriliser. It's bulky but lightweight - it needs to be bulky if you want to sterilise lots of items all at once. Before we got this steriliser, we were boiling bottles, teats, containers and the breast pump in a pan. The pan was never big enough, the items always came out feeling less than clean, and it was all a big hassle. The steam steriliser is perfect for our needs, it has three levels inside where you can rack up your items - a bit like a dishwasher - but designed for the Philips AVENT range. So if you've already got an AVENT breast pump, AVENT bottles and teats you'll find they fit into this machine in a snap. There's no reason why other bottles and containers shouldn't fit in here either. Items come out of the steriliser looking and feeling really clean.

I don't understand some of the other reviews of this item. Our steriliser completes its cycle in 8 minutes. If you fill it with filtered water the limescale doesn't build up so quickly in a hard water area. Philips recommend you descale it every month and provide you with 6 months' supply of citric acid for the purpose. As with other products in the AVENT range, we've found that they are also supplied with a generous helping of extras. With the steriliser we were given 2 different sized feeding bottles, 4 teats, 2 soothers and a bottle-cleaning brush. We're constantly impressed by the AVENT range and would recommend this steriliser to any parent who is tired of the manual sterilisation ritual.
